Anime Art
Girls must complete 2 Skill Builders, 1 Technology, 1 Career Exploration, 1 Service Project + 2 additional requirements from any section to earn this badge.
**Important Note: Anime & Manga have many different genres. Some are teen appropriate, some are not. Before starting this badge, make sure you check with a parent/guardian about the specific Anime/Manga you are planning on viewing.
Skill Builders
Anime & Manga both use “Anime Art” but are different things. Find out what each of these are and how they are different and how they are similar. Is the artwork similar between the two for the same series?
Anime & Manga have different genres. View/read at least 2 different genres and compare them with some friends. How do drawings differ between genres? Which do you prefer & why?
Using a book (you can get one at most libraries) or by researching online, study Anime & Manga by different artists in different decades. How has the art changed over time? What are some similarities? What are some differences? Has a single artist changed their style over the years?
Choose a style of Manga or Anime you like and create your own character. Draw them with either different clothing, different settings or in different poses.
Make a list of some of the different characteristics in Anime art vs. Western cartoons/comics. What are some of the biggest differences? Is the difference just in the characters or in themes/situations?
Technology
There are different YouTube videos tutorials & tutorial apps available to help you learn to draw Anime-style. Try at least 2 of these and rate how well they work for you. Compare your findings with a friend.
Use a program online or an app to draw Manga or Anime on the computer.
Career Exploration
Find out what colleges offer classes for Anime/Manga art. Do they offer a degree? If so, how long would it take to earn this degree?
What careers are available using Anime Art? What skills do you need for these?
Interview someone who makes a living using Anime Art.
Service Project
Create your own Manga or Anime to share with younger Girl Scouts or take it to a Children’s Hospital to share with kids there.
Host a workshop to teach younger Girl Scouts how to draw Manga.
Create a motivational poster for your school or community center using your Anime Art skills. Make sure you get permission to hang this up.
