1. Origin of Anime What is the definition of an anime? In your opinion, do you consider something deemed an ‘anime’ as strictly originating from Japan, or simply an animation style? What was the first anime series to be produced and when did it originally air?
2. Term Definitions With your troop, have a contest and see who can correctly define the most terms: Fandom Otaku (Western definition) Senpai Kawaii Chibi Manga Weeaboo Fanfiction Ship OTP 3. Sub, Dub, and Fandub What is the difference between a “sub,” a “dub,” and a “fandub”? Pick an anime episode and watch both a professionally subbed and dubbed version of it. Did you have a preference? If so, why? If not, why do you think some people would prefer one over the other? With your troop, fandub a short scene from an anime as a group.
4. Have a Cosplay Party! What is cosplaying? Pick a character from an anime, make your own costume (no prebought cosplay outfits), and cosplay at your troop meeting. Hold a contest, and have your friends vote who had the most original, professional, or funniest costume.
5. “Guess that Anime Opener” In this game, girls will make two teams. Choose a category of anime (Shoujo anime, Kodomomuke anime, etc.). The leader will play an opening theme from an anime and
girls will guess what anime it’s from. The first team to guess correctly gets a point, and the team with the most points at the end wins.
6. Anime Charades Divide girls into two teams. One team will pick 5 or 6 anime characters and bring in props representing them, and act them out (remember, no words!). The other team will guess which character(s) the other girl(s) are acting out.
7. Anime Episode Development Pick an anime series and research how long it takes to make an episode, what things are involved in making an episode along with episode development (from basic sketches and designs to the actual product). Compare your results to those of your troop mates. Do most of your results match theirs?
8. Review a Short Anime Series Over the course of a few meetings, watch and review a short anime series. List pros/ cons about the storyline, plot, humor, music, and character development. How did you like the overall show? Would you recommend it? If so, why?
9. Anime Opener/Closers Learn the Japanese lyrics to your favorite anime’s opener or closer and, in front of your troop, sing along with the music in Japanese.
10.Anime Presentation Cosplay (you can make your own cosplay or wear a pre-bought one) as your favorite character from your favorite anime and talk to your troop mates about the plot of that anime, some of the characters, the music used, etc. If you have any merchandise or accessories from that anime, bring them in as well. Make sure girls pick different animes so the same one is not presented twice.
11.Authentic Anime Food Have you ever wished you could reach into your screen and try some of the food that’s eaten in animes? Find a recipe online that was made in an anime episode, cook it (with your parent’s help, if necessary), and bring it in to one of your meetings or share it with your family.
12. 12.Anime Music Scores Learn a song from an anime on an instrument either as a solo, duet, or group, and preform it in front of your family and/or troop.
13.Japanese Art-style Try drawing different styles of Japanese art (chibi, anime). Pick a character not from an anime and draw that character in chibi style and anime style.
14.Fanart What is “fanart”? Find 10 of your favorite pieces of fanart (created by either you or art you’ve found online), and make a collage and present it to your troop. If you have a sketch book with anime drawings, bring that in, too, and present it if you wish.
15.Manga vs. Fanfiction. Research the definition of a “manga.” As a troop, pick a short manga and read at least the first five chapters. Discuss what you liked/ disliked about the plot, art, character development, and humor. Now, research what a “fanfiction” is. List at least three different types of fanfictions. Read a fanfic. of your favorite anime or write your own.
16.Comic Con Have you ever attended a comic con? If so, share your experience with your troop mates. Bring in any merchandise from the con that you may have. Did you get to try any interesting food? What kind of activities/contests were available? If you have the chance, attend one with your troop.
