Requirements
Review Safety-Wise pages 95-96 before beginning this badge. There must be one adult, currently certified as an instructor by the National Archery Association, or has equivalent certification or documented experience indicating knowledge and skill in teaching/supervising archery.
• Do the one REQUIRED activity • Do ONE activity of your choice from each of the THREE categories (LEARN, DO, SHARE) • Design and do ONE activity of YOUR OWN • Create a short REFLECTION after you've completed all of the activities
Required: Demonstrate that you know and understand:
a. the safety zones and whistle commands at an archery range.
b. The proper shooting stance.
c. The proper way to nock an arrow and draw back the string.
Learn:
1. Learn how to care for a bow and the bowstring when in use and how to store them properly.
2. Learn about the different types of arrows and the kind of shooting for which they are used. Learn how to match arrows to bows and how to care for arrows.
3. Demonstrate stringing and unstringing a bow or know three methods of string a bow.
4. Learn about the types of safety equipment used in archery.
5. Learn how to repair arrows and what the crest is for.
6. Learn the names of the different parts of the bows and arrows.
7. Learn about the history of archery.
8. Learn about the types of organizations/competitions are available for archery in your area.
Do:
1. Practice proper shooting techniques.
2. Be able to shoot a round of 5 arrows at a distance of 20 yards. Score your round. If you are skilled at this distance, increase it.
3. Be able to explain the proper use of safety equipment and other equipment used in archery
4. Trace the path of development in archery from a survival skill to a sport.
5. Make a list of local organizations in your area which offer archery in your area.
6. Organize an archery event for other Girl Scouts.
Share:
1. Share the history of Archery with younger scouts or others in your troop/group.
2. Share a list of organizations who offer archery in your community with younger scouts or your troop/group.
3. Give demonstrations to younger scouts at an archery event. Show them the proper way to stand, load a bow, draw, release, follow through, retrieve an arrow and how to follow whistle commands and observe the safety zones.
4. Make a video on proper Archery techniques to show to others before they participate in the sport.
