Requirements
Complete all requirements:
1. COMPLETE a ceramic piece using stains.
2. COMPLETE a ceramic piece using underglazes.
3. COMPLETE a ceramic piece using glazes.
4. Learn the proper way to stack and fire a kiln for both greenware and glazed pieces.
5. Learn the difference between coil, slab and wheel thrown pottery. Complete a piece using one of these methods. Collect pictures of pottery; include pieces from several countries or cultures.
6. Find out some different types of overglaze decorating techniques. Use one of these on a finished piece.
7. Learn about at least 6 different careers in the ceramic field.
8. Learn and be able to demonstrate how to case a piece of greenware; and learn and be able to demonstrate how to fire a hand-built piece.
9. Find out about some of the chemicals used in ceramic glazes. Which chemicals produce what colors? Which are safe to use on items that will in contact with food?
10. Discover how cones are used to regulate the temperature in a kiln. What cones are used most for hobby ceramics?
11. Visit a ceramic shop and a potter’s studio. What differences did you find?
12. Several different types of clays are used in the ceramics field. Find out what these clays are, how they are used and what temperatures they can be fired. Complete piece from at least three different types of clay.
