D I N E
(The People)
PURPOSE: To learn about the important contributions of Indians to the history and culture of Western
Oklahoma
BROWNIES: Complete 4 activities, including #1 starred (*)
JUNIORS: Complete 6 activities, including #1 starred (*)
CADETTES, SENOIRS & AMBASSADORS: Complete 8 activities, including #1 starred (*)
*1. On a map of the state of Oklahoma, show the following:
a. The Indian tribes that originally inhabited the territory that is now Western Oklahoma.
b. The Indian tribes presently represented by large concentrations in Western Oklahoma.
2. Dramatize an Indian legend or a historical Indian event that occurred in your area.
3. Learn to play an Indian game. Teach it to another patrol, younger Scouts or your sister troop.
4. Attend a special Indian event (pow-wow).
5. Visit an Indian museum within Western Oklahoma or perhaps an Indian exhibit within your locality.
6. Learn about the food eaten by the Indians in our area, past and present. Prepare one of the foods.
7. Observe the paintings of Indian artists and contrast them to other types of paintings.
8. Learn about the crafts done by the Indians in their day-today living. Pick one of these crafts (such
as
Leather, beading, beading, pottery, basketry) and have fun learning how to do it.
9. Learn about the differences in the dress and the homes of the different Indians in West. Oklahoma.
10. Learn how the Indian expresses himself in music and dance.
a. Learn an Indian dance, or
b. Make an Indian musical instrument, or
c. Learn an Indian song
11. Learn how our Oklahoma land has changed since the Indian was first here.
What plants did the Indians bring to the land to cultivate?
What animals are no longer here?
What was the Indian concept of the “Mother Earth”?
12. Learn what famous Indian artists reside in Western Oklahoma and what art form they use
(painting, sculpture, carving, etc.)
13. Learn 10 Indian signs or symbols.
14. Learn the meaning of the symbols of the Oklahoma State Flag and the State Seal.
15. Choose a tribe and discover how one became enrolled in that tribe.
