Requirements:
Destination Discovery (Wave)
Brownies pick 4
Juniors pick 5 with 1 from each category
C/S/A pick 7 with at least 2 skills, 1 career, 1 service, 1 technology, 2 activity
Skill:
What is the difference between organic and non-organic fruits and veggies? Use the internet to help you find the differences. How can you ‘spot’ these differences when shopping? What do producers/stores have to help people who do not know how to ‘spot’ them? Just for fun: Try your hand at growing your own fruit or veggies. Hint: on many packets they labeled as beginner/intermediate/advanced
Use this link to help you make your own child with DNA and genetics:
http://www.sciencekidsathome.com/science_ex…/genet...
Define: DNA, Genetics/Genes, DNA replica, Protein synthesis, Dominant, Recessive. How do all these words fit together? What do they have to do with each other? Draw/Construct DNA you can use colored marshmallows and pretzels for an edible DNA piece.
Service:
Find out what happens when someone has one too many/few ‘genes’ or when ‘genes’ are not the ‘normal genes’ that people have. Try to locate a school/work place that specifically works with people that have these types of genes. With your troop/friends make friendship bracelets/necklaces or something else you would like and have someone deliver them to the school. Or even better—take a trip and give them out yourself.
Career:
Visit a local farm. Talk to a farmer and see what he has to do to take care of the farm? Is he able to take care of his house and family with the work he does on the farm? Does he have an income? How did farming become his way of life? What made him decide to become a farmer?
Visit a local garden center and speak to some of the gardeners. What do they grow that can be eaten? How do they maintain the garden? Is it organic or non-organic? How could you try this in your local area or at home?
Technology:
Use this link to breed your own dog:
http://pbskids.org/dragonflytv/games/game_dogbreed...
What did you learn about breeding? Try breeding more than one. Do the results change? Why or why not? How could you achieve a different outcome?
Explore this website:
http://www.neok12.com/Genetics.htm
What is on it? Can you find the information you are looking for? What is your favorite part? Why? Do your friends/troop agree?
Activitiy:
In the wild carrots grow in many shapes, sizes, and even colors. Have you ever seen a purple carrot? How about a white one? Take a look at this website. What do you notice about it?
After you visit the website, take a trip to your local farmers market and see if you can find someone who is selling or growing non-orange carrots. Consider purchasing some and doing a taste test of them.

The book ‘Allegiant’ talks about “GP” (Genetically Pure) and “GD” (Genetically Damaged). Take the following examples and split your troop/friends into groups based on your answers to the following questions.
Can you roll your tongue? Yes-GP; No-GD
Are your earlobes attached or not? Yes-GP; No-GD
Do you have dimples? Yes-GP; No-GD
Right handed or left? Right-GP; Left-GD
Cross/Clasp your hands together…is the right or left thumb on top? Right-GP; Left-GD
Is your second toe longer or shorter than your big toe? Shorter-GP; Longer-GD
After doing this, talk about how it made you feel to be GP or GD. Although this doesn’t really depict if you are GP or GD it does give an example of a very unreasonable test. Was it fair? Was there anything you could do about it? Can you change who you are? Many times people make assumptions based on what a person can or cannot do. As a Girl Scout it’s important to make everyone feel like a friend. To make sure that no one is left out or feels like they are GD. Think about this as you are at school, the park, playing sports etc. The next time you see someone who needs a friend, be that friend.
