*First and foremost, learn about all safety precautions that must be taken when handling, caring for, and riding a horse. What personal safety equipment and supplies are needed, required, and recommended for the rider? For the horse?
*Learn about the parts of a horse and be able to name and label 10 main parts. Learn about proper grooming and demonstrate what you have learned. What is a farrier? Why is their job important to horses? Watch a video or live demonstration of a farrier in action.
*Learn about 3 different breeds of horses. What are the special features of each breed? What are each breed used for? How are the breed similar? How are they different?
* What is a bridle? What is a halter? How are they similar? Why are the different? Know the parts of bridle and what each part is for. What is a lead rope? What are reins? How are they similar? Why are they different?
What illnesses and equine diseases specifically affect horses? Find the 5 most common health conditions that horses face and the recommended treatments for those ailments. What vaccinations do horses require? Why are they important and what do they protect horses against?
Learn about saddles. How many different styles of riding and saddles are there? What are the similarities? What are the differences? What is a saddle blanket and why is it important? Be able to name and label 5 main parts of a saddle. Be able to properly saddle a horse.
Learn how to properly and safely mount and dismount a horse. Demonstrate what you have learned.
Research a proper diet for a horse. Grain, feed, hay, or a combination? What vitamins and minerals are important for equine health? What vitamins and minerals are horses supposed to avoid? What are the consequences of an improper diet?
Learn about proper housing for equines? Learn what “mucking a stall” means. What is appropriate bedding in a stall? Do horses use socks or blankets? Why or why not? Do horses have other specialty clothing? If yes, what is it used for?
With proper adult supervision and approval from your governing body, take a ride!
