Flower – Do all starred.

Triangle – Do 6 requirements including starred.

Circle – Do 8 requirements including starred.

Rectangle – Do all requirements including starred.

Prepare 2 pieces of rope, different colors, roughly 12 inches in length. Whip or fuse ends, then mark ends with colored tape. Use the colored ends to explain directions such as “put the green end through the blue rope loop”. Use dowels for hitches and lashings.

1. * Start with basic knots. Using your pre-prepared ropes, learn the following knots:

• Overhand knot – Make a loop and go through it.
• Square knot – Right over left and under, left over right and under.
• Granny knot – Right over left and under, right over left and under.

Why are these knots important and what are they used for?

1. *Learn the Bowline knot, or Rescue knot. Why is this knot important? What uses are there for this knot? **Circle & Rectangle – Learn how to do a One-Handed Bowline knot.

1. *Learn the Slip knot. Why is this knot useful to know? Where can you use this knot?

1. *Learn Two half-hitches. This is called a lashing. What are lashings used for and why are they important to know?

1. *Teach a knot that you have learned to another person and explain why it is important for them to know this knot and what it can be used for.

1. Learn the following lashings:

• Taut-line hitch
• Clove hitch
• Timber hitch

What are hitches used for? Where would a person use them the most?

1. Learn a Fisherman’s knot. Can this knot be used for multiple purposes or is it for only one? Are there other knots that have only one purpose?

1. Learn about Whipping and Fusing rope. Why are these important? Show that you know how to do each.

1. Using what you have learned, create a raft or other craft such as a lean-to. This can be full-sized (with fallen trees, branches, etc.) or miniature (using dowels). Try to represent every knot and lashing that you have learned.
