Junior Badge
The purpose of this Junior Badge is to educate Girl Scouts about the rich history of Michigan’s Great Lakes lighthouses and the importance restoration and preservation for future generations.
To earn, complete six (6) of the following requirements:
1. What is a lighthouse and where are they located? Why are they located there?
2. Look at pictures of lighthouses near you or that you would like to visit, then do one of the following: Make a model of a lighthouse out of clay, paper, paper cups, or paint, color or draw it. More-design your own lighthouse.
3. Read stories about haunted lighthouses and lighthouse lore.
4. Learn about one female Lighthouse Keeper? Who was Michigan’s first female Lighthouse Keeper? Which lighthouse was she keeper of? What years was she there?
5. Find out about the history of lighthouses and lightships. How many lighthouses are there in Michigan? How many lightships?
6. Invite someone from a local lighthouse preservation group to come and speak with your troop.
7. Learn the lighthouse terminology.
8. Visit a lighthouse, either online or in person. Why did you choose this lighthouse? What are some interesting facts that you could share with the rest of your troop?
9. Find out interesting facts about lighthouses and share with others, either through photos, drawings, stories, or mysteries.
10. Do a service project of your choice that would help preserve a lighthouse, or spread the information of lighthouse preservation efforts.
