The raingutter regatta is a racing event that uses small sailboats. Within the basic design rules, participants are free to paint and decorate their sailboats as they choose. Modifications for speed include the placement of the keel and rudder and the size, shape and location of the sail.
The boats are raced in a standard rain gutter that is ten feet long, placed on a table or saw horses, and filled to the top with water. The boats are propelled by blowing on the sail, either directly or through a drinking straw; the boat cannot be touched with hands or the straw. The first boat to reach the end of the gutter is the winner. The overall winner is determined by an elimination system.
A winning raingutter racer stays on an even keel, moves in a straight line, keeps the bow above water and does not drag.
*Personal Safety is important! Study and understand the requirements of personal safety for: knives, handsaws, vices, files, hammers, screwdrivers, hand drills and drill bits, pliers, and portable power tools. What is the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when using them? What PPE do you use for flammable or hazardous products such as glue, epoxy, paint, and paint thinner? What other safety precautions must you take?
*What are sailboats? Learn about the main parts of a sailboat, what each part is for, and be able to label those parts. How important is each part?
How many different kinds of sailboats are there? Learn about 3 and explain what their differences are, what their similarities are, and what they each are best used for.
*What is propulsion? What is a sail and why is it so important? Are there different kinds of sails? What kinds can you find and how are they different? Research and find 3 different ways to propel your craft.
List at least 3 occupations in which sailing is used. What training and/or education is needed for those occupations? Share what you have learned with your group.
What are models? What are they used for? Learn how to shape a balsa wood model with different hand tools. What works best with the wood? What doesn’t work? Are there special tools just for balsa wood? Remember what you learn for when you build your own boat.
What is a regatta? Why does it have a special name? Research and find 3 famous regattas around the world.
