Skill Builders
1. Participate in the preparation of a parade float. See the GREAT Guide for more information.
2. Find out about the advertising and promotion of the Rose Parade. How is the parade advertised to the public? How are sponsors and float entries solicited? How is the program and advertisements put together? Find out the skills and education required of the people who work in these positions.
3. Learn about the history of the Portland Rose Festival. Contact the Oregon Historical society or the Rose Festival Association to learn about the first years of the Rose Festival.
4. Carry a banner in the Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade. See the GREAT Guide for details.
Technology
1. Learn about how computers have advanced float technology. How are computer graphics programs are used in float design?
2. Learn about cloning and scientific advances in pollination. Explore how these techniques have affected the varieties and quality of roses. Learn how a new variety of roses are created.
3. Learn about the principle of bouyancy. What makes a ship stay afloat? Tour the Rose Festival Fleet and see how these principles are applied.
Service Projects
1. Create your own community garden! Be sure to include roses and other flowers. Involve your neighbors, school, or other community members in the creation of your garden.
2. Volunteer for the Starlight Run. Although you are not allowed to run/walk for Girl Scouts because you cannot earn money for another organization there are many different ways you can participate! 3. Assist a group of senior citizens or persons with disabilities in attending a Rose Festival event. Contact a local senior center or convalescent home to volunteer.
Career Exploration
1. Talk with a floral designer responsible for the arrangement of flowers on a float. Discover how this person became involved in float decoration. What kinds of education and training are required for this career?
2. Speak to the owner or manager of a float decorating company. Find out about the education and skills required in running a successful company.
3. Choose a non-profit organization in your community and learn how the company is funded, what services they provide, what type of staff they hire, and what issues and concerns they deal with.
