Requirements
To earn this Badge, complete at least SIX of the following activities:
1. Design a float for your community. Decide what the approximate cost might be. What kinds of materials would be used to decorate the fl oat? Decide what jobs are necessary for the completion of the fl oat and who you would need to employ to complete the jobs.
2. Learn about a career associated with float decorating such as florists, builders, artists, designers, and float production company owners.
3. Learn about materials used to decorate a Rose Parade Float. Where are the materials bought, where are they grown and what kinds of dry or fresh materials are used for decorating the float?
4. Volunteer at the “Make the Town Clean” event with your troop. This is a SOLV sponsored event where volunteers are assigned to specific sites to collect litter off street corners, sidewalks, bus stops and common areas. For more information or to register, contact your local SOLV office.
5. Talk with a f oat builder about the mechanics of a float, how the float moves, and how animation is achieved.
6. Attend the Portland Rose Society Annual Spring Rose Show presented during the Rose Festival or another local rose show. Learn about different types of roses and how to grow them.
7. Visit the Qwest Dex Showcase of Floats after the Rose Parade to view the floats. List as many different kinds of flowers and natural products were used to decorate these fl oats as you can.
8. Attend the Dragon Boat Races held during the Rose Festival. Learn about the boats themselves and about the people who race them.
9. Go to http://www.rosefestival.org" class="redactor-linkify-object">www.rosefestival.org to learn about the history of the Rose Parade or look through books or newspaper articles from past years.
