**What is sewing? How long has sewing existed? How was sewing done before the 19th century? Learn all you can about the history of sewing and share what you have learned.
What types of sewing are there and what are they used for? Hint*sewing is not just for clothes!
What equipment do you need for hand sewing? What is a thimble and how is it used?
What is a sewing machine? What different types of machines are there and what are they used for? Research and find a sewing machine for a beginner and a sewing machine for a master. Compare and contrast them, and explain why they you selected them for each.
What types of buttons are there? What are the different kinds of buttons used for? How do you attach the different types of buttons? Learn how to re-attach a button to your clothing that has fallen off.
Make your own book! Learn about sewn book bindings then create your own book to use!
What are sewing notions? What is bias tape and what is it used for? Take a trip to your local fabric store and see all of the different notions. Make a list of what is available and what they are used for.
Learn about embroidery and cross stitch. How are they similar? How are they different? What equipment do you need to create a design? What is floss? Create a design on graph paper and try to re-create it using either embroidery or cross stitch.
How do you sew on patches/badges? Learn a hand stitch that you can use to sew on a patch/badge/applique. If you have a sewing machine, decide on a stitch that will help with the same.
Learn how to hem a pair of pants and/or skirt.
What types of quilting are there? What is batting? How do you connect all the layers? What is binding? Learn about the history of quilting and how it has progressed through time.
Learn about patterns. Using a small pattern, sew something simple such as a pair of shorts or a pillow.
Sew something! Using all that you have learned, create a sampler of 4 squares that show all that you have learned. Either hand or machine stitch the 4 squares together. In the first square, hand or machine stitch a patch/badge/applique. In the second square, sew on your embroidery or cross stitch design. In the third corner, embroider your name. In the fourth corner, sew on a button or buttons. Once all 4 squares are complete, quilt it using what you have learned about batting and binding!
