1. *What is a shelter and what are they used for? Describe the features that every shelter needs to have.

1. Tents are the most common forms of shelters. Research the history of tents: what are they made of now? What were they made of when Julliette Gordon Low was a girl?

1. Before tents, what were some more traditional shelters? What were they made of, how where they built?

1. * Shelters can be permanent, like picnic pavilions, or easily moved like tents. Can you think of any shelters that people lived in? What makes them easy to move, or what made them permanent? What materials can they be made of?

1. Shelters are often used in emergency situations. Can you think of an emergency situation that you would need to find or make a shelter? What type of things can you use to make one? Find some things in your home that you could make a quick shelter with. Would a cardboard box work? What would you use if you were in the woods?

1. Let's think about the location of a shelter. The environment you are in will greatly influence the type of shelter you need. What if it snows, rains, is very hot or on the beach? What features of a shelter are important for each environment? What type do you have at your Girl Scout camp?

1. We aren't the only ones who need shelter. If the weather turns bad, where do the animals find shelter? Do some of them build their own shelters? Think about some animal homes and what they build or use for shelter.

1. Go and visit an outdoor store. Talk to an employee about the different types of tents they sell. They have everything from a lightweight 2 person backpacking tent (smaller than your bed!) to a 14 person cabin tent with closets. What would you use a tent for? Which one would work best for your group or family?

1. *Design time! Using paper and your imagination, design the perfect shelter. What does your perfect shelter have, what would you use to build it, where would be the best place build it? Why?

1. *Can a girl pitch a tent? Yes she can! See if any friends or family have a tent or 2 you can borrow. Do you know how to pitch a tent? Every tent is a little different, but the basics are the same. Make sure you start by spreading the tent out flat, assembling the poles, and reading the instructions for each tent. Do you need stakes? Don't forget your rain fly!
