1. **Brownies pick 10/Juniors pick 15/CSA pick 20** Determine where each of the following Winter Sports originated and who typically participates in each sport. What is involved in each sport. If you find some not listed below, feel free to check them out too, as there are many.
Skiing: Cross country, Alpine, Downhill, Ski-jumping
Boarding: Apline, Slalom, Slope
Skating: Speed, Figure, Synchronized
Sledding: Bob, Dog Mobiling: Free, Recreational, Cross-country
Team: Bandy, Curling, Ice Hockey, Snow Rugby, Yukigassen
Other: Ice Climbing, Snow Biking, Ice Canoeing, Fat Tire Biking, Snow Drifting Recreational: Snowman Building, Ice Boating, Ice Fishing, Tobogganing, Snow Shoeing, Ice Sailing, Ice Swimming
2. Skiing How many types of winter skiing are there? (Hint: Cross-Country, Alpine, Downhill, Ski-Jump are just a few to get you started.) See how many you can find. Where did they originate? How do they differ? How are they alike? Have you ever done any of them?
3. Skating How many types of winter skating are there? (Hint: Speed, Figure are just a few to get you started.) See how many you can find. Where did they originate? How do they differ? How are they alike? Have you ever done any of them?
4. Snow What types of snow are there? How does location affect snow? How does temperature affect snow? What about ice? Does snow become ice? How do you know? What about real snow vs artificial snow? What is the purpose of artificial snow?
5. Dress Considering your choices in #1, how should you dress for each sport that you chose? How does material/fabric affect you when you wear it? What clothing is best for layering? Blocking wind? Water resistant? Insulation? Breathing? What type of eye protection is there? How is it best used?
6. Interview a professional winter athlete or a person whose job includes winter sports. Sample questions: How old were you started? How did you get involved? How long have you been doing _______? Why did you choose “_______”?
7. Plan an event with your friends/troop to participate in a winter sport of your choice. Be sure to wear the appropriate clothing.
8. Recreational vs Olympic How many sports are more common as a recreational vs as an olympic vs as an organized team/league etc. What’s your favorite? Why?
9. Sledding Find out the different types of sleds (toboggan, bob, dog-pulled, etc) and explain their purposes and history beyond just recreation. Go to a local sled hill, build a giant snow ramp, and jump on it with your favorite type of sled.
10. Winter vs Summer Olympics Decide how the winter and summer olympics are alike and how they are different. Which ones would you like to participate in? Why do you feel this way? What about your friends?
